Gray Market Kits vs. Tested Kits: Two Very Different Roads
In the last post, we broke down why a single $300 vial costs what it does. Now let’s look at the other side of the equation: the kits. Specifically, the gray market kit and the tested kit. They sound similar, but they’re not. And the price difference tells you a lot about what you’re actually paying for.
The Gray Market Kit: The Cheapest Route
A gray market kit is the most accessible option. Any average Joe can get one after jumping through a few obstacles. Pricing varies by compound, but generally you’re looking at $10 per vial. That’s it.
The supply chain is short: manufacturer → broker → you. That’s why it’s the cheapest option you’ll find. But just because a price list is cheap doesn’t mean you should chase the absolute lowest number. There’s a difference between a good deal and a red flag. We’ll get into vetting a gray market vendor another time. For now, just know that the gray market kit is the budget route.
Shipping on a gray market kit usually runs about $60-$100. It depends on how much you buy and where you live, but that’s a fair average.
The Tested Kit: Rarer and Pricier, But Not by as Much as You’d Think
+ shipping≈ $300
A tested kit is harder to find. Why? Because there’s more money to be made selling single vials. If a vendor can sell one vial for $100, why would they sell a whole kit for a fraction of that? That’s why tested kits are rare. But they do exist.
When you buy a tested kit, the only markup you should see is for testing and shipping. That’s it. So the price should be roughly half of what you’d pay for single vials online. Let’s use Reta 10mg as an example. Online, a single vial might run you $70-$100. In a tested kit, that same vial should cost around $20-$30. That means a kit—usually 10 vials—should be about $300 or less for RT10, plus shipping. If you’re seeing a tested kit priced way above that, you’re probably paying for something other than the test.
For tested kits, the per-vial range is generally half the price compared to what you can get online depending on the compound. That’s still higher than gray market, but you’re paying for the assurance of testing, not for a fancy website or ads.
Examples from the text (RT10). Prices vary by compound.
Where These Kits Are Sold—And Why It Feels Sketchy
Both gray market and tested kits are often sold through Discord or WhatsApp. Sometimes on websites. I know how that sounds. It sounds sketchy. But there’s a reason for it. The more a company spends on advertising, building a website, and running ads, the more that cost gets passed on to you. Discord and WhatsApp cut out that overhead. That doesn’t automatically make a vendor trustworthy, but it explains why the prices are lower.
The trick is learning how to separate a legitimate vendor from a bad one. That’s where vetting comes in. With a solid vendor vetting checklist, you can make educated decisions instead of guessing.
The Takeaway
Gray market kits are the cheapest route per vial, manufacturer to broker to you, with $100 shipping on average. Tested kits are rarer, usually 40–50% off per vial on what you would find online in one vial, and should only carry a markup for testing and shipping—so around $300 per kit plus shipping on RT10.
Next up, we’ll talk about vetting vendors so you can navigate these channels without getting burned.
